Deep in our Waterloo research labs, the Legally Addictive Games Research Team came to the conclusion that we needed a unique hook to grab users. After several million dollars in research and development, they came up with GrasstopTD, which our congregation of scientists deems the most original tower defense map ever created. The designs that they presented were like none we had ever seen before, a beautiful combination of the battlefields of many great wars fought throughout history. It was too much to handle. Half of our staff quit, and the union threatened to if we released it. Even we objected at first, but its beauty could not be denied, and so finally, we caved. To our collective of casual gamers, from our desktop to your BlackBerry, we give you GrasstopTD.

GrasstopTD is all about mazing. There are two versions, one with one entrance, one with two. This map is big, which gives a lot of room to explore different mazing strategies. Two general approaches are to keep the attackers separate or try to get them to group up and run through the maze together. Another important consideration are the air units, which have only a short distance to travel to get to the exit regardless of the size of your maze.

A good trick is to convert all your extra money into raising the level of all your gun towers. This will help increase your upgrade bonus. Make sure you use at least 1 of each tower and try to make the longest possible path.

I use a diagonal map with 4 Missile Towers and 3 Flak Towers to do all the damage. I typically use like 4 Frost Towers as well… hope this helps!

Has anyone uploaded any screenshots of their defenses or strategies for max scores on each level? I keep coming up about 20,000 points short of the high score no matter what I do….

The early release bonus is actually factored into your base score but if you look at the statistics page, you will see "Early Bonus" that will show you how much money you made by sending waves early throughout the game. 480×320 isn’t a whole lot of space for statistics after all.

What’s this about an early bonus? I don’t think I see this on my score breakdown.

I will try diagonal. Wish me luck. :D

It’s definitely based on the longest path at the end of the maze. Try doing a diagonal maze, as that creates the longest surface area around each square.

The best I’ve been able to do is 261 as the Mazing bonus… and that’s with a REALLY long maze…

Strange. The last game I did had the longest path I have ever made and yet I got a lower maze score. Are we certain that it isn’t rewarding for juggling longer?

When the last enemy is killed, it seems to take a snapshot of the longest current path through the maze (It goes for the longer one too on this two entrance map).

So if you are juggling, make sure the juggle for the longest path is set up prior to killing the last enemy.

Is the mazing bonus for actual travel time or does it take a look at your maze at the end of the game and base the point on that?

You’re getting close Tikan… I might have to take another crack at this one to see if I can set a higher target for you…

I’m estimating that 420k is probably the highest possible. I lost 2 lives when I set the current high score, so that would be another 4k. Plus, I could probably have gotten a bit higher of an early bonus.

Going to get some graph paper and make an even tighter maze. Still only getting a little over 200 mazing bonus.

You don’t get a higher score for 6x, but I’d be happy to tell you my tips on scoring (I’ve had quite a few conversations with the developers on it).

The base score is based on how quickly you kill everything and the level you play on. On the hardest level killing everything, this will only get you so far.

The other factors that significantly impact your score are the Mazing bonus, Upgrade bonus, and Diversity bonus. Make sure to use at least 1 of each tower, as you get 5000 points for each tower type used.

The Mazing bonus is the length of the path that has to be traveled for a unit to escape. Try to make the longest maze possible to get a big score. My highest is 261, which gets you an extra 68k points.

The Upgrade bonus is based on how many units you have upgraded. Each upgrade is worth 50 points. What I do to get a really high score is spend all my money on upgrading towers at approximately level 95.

On levels where I don’t get to make a maze, I try to build as many "useless" Gun towers and just upgrade them. I try to fill the screen with as many as I can fit.

If you get 300 total upgrades, its an extra 15k points.

Wish there was a breakdown of how the scoring is done.

I dunno. I am launching everything in large packs of 5-10 and am still not getting as high as you are. I must be missing some bonus somewhere. Do you get a higher score for 6x?

    MoneyMike (November 23, 2009)

My scores are impressive, but for some reason I can’t get my time anywhere close to what everyone else seems to be getting. I’ve got it on 6x speed the whole time and I kill stuff really fast (I normally have 160+ early bonus).

Any idea why my time is so slow compared to others?

We really didn’t know it was possible either, great work!

Finally cracked 400k on this… I was wondering if it was even possible… Glad it was!
